Book Review: On Rotation

Book Review: On Rotation

This book is funny and interesting and romantic and I loved all of the vibrant characters. As a chronic overachiever myself, every time Angela gets something fantastic but slightly under expectations, I’m also absolutely gutted. Honestly, I don’t really read straight romances, but this is a great exception. Five stars. Bookshop link.

Love and Justice book review | A Journey of Empowerment, Activism, and Embracing Black Beauty

Love and Justice book review | A Journey of Empowerment, Activism, and Embracing Black Beauty

This is a fantastic book that is half personal essay and half photography, although some of it feels like a textbook or a magazine, with little callouts of blocks of texts with facts about the Ivory Coast or explanations about African culture. Laetitia Ky’s hair sculptures and modeling is absolutely magnificent, and it’s laid out […]

Book Review: Great or Nothing

Book Review: Great or Nothing

Honestly, I didn’t like this at all! Beth, if not my favorite Little Women character, is my special interest at the moment, and when the story starts she is already dead, and the grief that the sisters experience drives them apart rather than together (which is very interesting). Jo is queer in this retelling, which […]

thoughts on use of color in The Arrival

How might the use of color change the mood of The Arrival? If you were the author would you have used color or stuck with the neutral tones used? Why or why not? I think that the neutral tones work really really well for the Arrival – both to increase its old-timey feel and introduce […]

Hana Hashimoto, Sixth Violin

I read the book Hana Hashimoto, Sixth Violin. This book is about Hana who wants to play violin at her school’s talent show, but she’s only had three lessons. Her brothers, Kenji and Koji, laugh at her and tell her she won’t be good enough, but she wants to play the violin like her grandfather […]

Marisol McDonald Doesn’t Match

I love all the little details about how Marisol McDonald doesn’t “match” in any sense; she wears stripes and polka dots in the same outfit, she has red hair and brown skin, and she signs her name half in cursive and half in print. I love the details about how the Spanish/English isn’t “translated” between […]

Bite-sized reviews

Oof, some really short reviews for some great books this week. Sorry about that, folks, I’ve been consumed by migraines and looking at a bright screen is exceptionally bad for me. As always, I received everything from NetGalley ahead of time in exchange for an honest review. She Gets the Girl by Rachael Lippincott and […]
